Woodpeckers have zygodactyl feet, which consist of four toes, the first and fourth facing forward and the second and third facing rear. This toe arrangement is perfect for grasping rough textures such as tree bark. Woodpeckers can walk right up a tree when foraging for food. In addition to powerful claws, woodpeckers have short strong legs. Their tails are rigid and act as a support along with their feet and legs.
I build these feeders from reclaimed western red cedar, a tough, somewhat oily wood that does well in outdoors. It has six feeding stations, two of which offer enough tail room for larger woodpeckers, though maybe not the very large pileated woodpeckers. At 11" tall, made for smaller downy woodpeckers, chickadees, and nuthatches.
Complete hanging hardware including a 2 foot long cable. I roll my own logs from pre-mixed cakes for easier loading. It takes a minute or two to get the hang of it, but your woodpeckers will be fun to watch and so happy you provided them with this energy-packed treat they need!
